A women’s healthcare mobile app for their non-reproductive medical needs, aimed to improve female patient outcomes.

As part of my UX immersive class, I had the opportunity to work with a client to bring an idea of theirs to life. This was an invaluable experience that allowed me to apply the skills I had learned in class to a real-world project. I worked collaboratively with a team of 3 people to understand the needs and goals of our stakeholder, who is a healthcare professional. Together we worked to design a mobile application that helps improve female patient outcomes.

A lack of confidence in adult female patients

Our client is an entrepreneur with 15 years of experience in healthcare and sales. During her time working in healthcare, she noticed a discrepancy between the medical information available to patients, and how much patients actually understood. She came to us with alarming information...

When it comes to healthcare decisions and medical concerns, women make do 80% of the decision-making. Yet only 38% of women feel confident in a doctor's office. Many adult women only see OB/GYN doctors for all their healthcare concerns.

Vision for women’s health

Our client wanted to develop a mobile application that empowers women to embrace their well-being by shifting the focus from reproductive health to their holistic physical and mental state. This app will provide adult women with convenient access to a range of healthcare resources such as preventative care guides, appointment preparation assistance, and data storage capabilities.

Goal

Design a MVP of a women’s health mobile app, so our client could pitch it to potential investors.

Because the project was in its early stages, the client was still deciding all the features she wanted the app to have. Our task was to design an MVP with a few essential key features. This holistic approach would aim to provide an understanding of the overall vision behind this project while also considering the app's ongoing refinement.

What do women need to be confident patients?

A lack of confidence in adult female patients

An audit of other health platforms was done to investigate what strategies and techniques they may be using for users. Particularly we looked into specialty care to know what specific area of medicine they offer resources for, and key offerings with regard to other medical information and guides for patients. We found that current health apps do offer several options for users to choose from for use in both specialty care and general resources. However, we did not want to stop here and decided to go onto interviews with actual women.

User Interviews

The target audience for this application is adult women, particularly mothers aged 40 and up. The emphasis on mothers is due to the fact that they are the primary decision-makers for their families' healthcare decisions. This often results in mothers neglecting their own health needs. The application will provide mothers with information and resources to help them take care of themselves.

We interviewed 5 mothers and asked 14 questions about how they handle their medical concerns, where they go for information, and more.

Insights

Based on the competitive audit, users have multiple online options to access medical resources and information. However, during our interviews, we observed a common issue among women: a disconnect between their comprehension of the available information.

Ideation

Women need comprehensible medical resources that will empower them to be proactive patients, both in and outside of clinical settings.

In response to the challenges women encounter in comprehending intricate healthcare information, our core objective shifted towards developing an intuitive mobile app. We emphasized simplifying health guides and facilitating access to traditionally perplexing resources.

Mid-Fidelity

The high-level beta version of this mobile application encompassed a diverse set of features, including resources tailored for both clinical and non-clinical settings. This approach empowers users to proactively manage their health through access to healthcare resources that they can access anywhere.

Limitations

The project was in its early stages, so we were unable to work on certain aspects of the platform at the client's request, as they were still being refined and planned. Despite this, we did our best to flesh out as many aspects of the project as possible, while others had to remain vague. We had to show a lot of restraint and use our judgment skills to know where to invest our energy.

User Testing

Through usability tests, we were able to observe pain points with the prototype. Users particularly struggled with the navigation citing being confused by certain medical terminology. Moving forward, we knew that we needed to simplify the language we were using.

Visual Language

The identity and brand visuals for this mobile app were designed to reflect women’s empowerment and ownership of their femininity. The app was intended to allow women to casually check in on their health needs without feeling like they were using a traditional medical app.

Final Design

Introducing 'ViFi' – the women's health app that provides easy-to-understand information to effortlessly meet their medical needs at their own pace.

Users can start by creating an account and telling us their age and any underlying health conditions they have to provide them a personalized experience.

Search practitioners near you or get help from a distance through virtual care and prescription deliveries.

Access health timelines based on your age and non-traditional preventative care resources.

Store information related to your health like appointment documents, insurance, prescriptions, primary care doctor, and more.

Retrospective

We were honored to work closely with our client, transforming their empowering vision for 'The ViFi' into a remarkable healthcare experience dedicated to women. Through a custom design system, we crafted an intuitive platform. Despite my initial limited healthcare knowledge, the extensive research and design process enriched my understanding, providing invaluable insights for my future endeavors.
